The Plus {+} sign in LGBTQIA

Explaining the plus [+] sign in LGBTQIA+

The “+” sign is a symbol that represents members of the community who identify with a sexual orientation or gender identity that isn’t included within the LGBTQIA acronym. It’s an inclusive way of representing gender and sexual identities that letters and words cannot yet fully describe.

When referring to a person's sexual orientation or gender identification, the acronym LGBTQIA+ is used. Sexual orientation pertains to a person's physical, emotional, and romantic attraction to another person — such as being heterosexual, gay, lesbian, or bisexual. A person's internal feeling of being female, male, or someone who does not fit into the gender binary is referred to as gender identity.

It's essential to understand that sex and gender are not the same and that gender identity is not based on one's assigned sex at birth.

The letters in the LGBTQIA+ acronym have developed to reflect how the world is becoming more accepting of people's sexual orientation and gender identity.
